The Audition Process - Your One-Minute Audition

CORNERSTONE YOUTH THEATRE encourages every student ages 8 -18 to participate in auditions. Auditions are a wonderful way for students to gain confidence and experience in performing in front of people. We feel training is important, and with that comes the confidence and skills necessary to have a good audition. Unfortunately, we are sometimes unable to cast all who audition, but we feel that the experience of auditioning is something students won’t want to miss. Students not cast in the show are encouraged to participate in other ways such as serving on a backstage or technical crew, assistant ushering, special activities, or refreshments. More information regarding auditions will be given the first class day.
Do I Have To Be Enrolled In A Class To Audition To Be In A Show?
Yes, you do have to be enrolled in a class to audition to be in a show. Class tuition refunds will not be given to students who audition, and are not cast in a show.
What Do I Bring To Auditions?
• A completed and signed
CONFLICT FORM
• An instrumental only, cued accompaniment track (like Karaoke) for your one minute song.
• Cornerstone provides (for educational purposes) a few appropriate audition clips, available at the above link. These clips will be Available on our Tech Computer for use at auditions. Just mark on your audition form that you are using a Cornerstone Clip
We do not have internet access at the venue - so we cannot stream your audition track, or access it online.
If you are using your own device, make sure you can plat the track when your device is IN AIRPLANE MODE. Please bring a DOWNLOADED track on an UNLOCKED device, or email your track to

What happens at Auditions?
Registration for your audition is simple. To secure a spot for your audition, simply arrive at the audition location between the stated times. For example, if your auditions are held between 4:30 and 7:00 pm and you sign in between those times, you are guaranteed an audition slot.
Upon submitting all the appropriate materials at the audition registration (online audition form and Conflict Sheet), auditioners are assigned a number. Auditions then take place in groups of 10. For example, numbers 1-10 sit in their designated spots in the audition room.
After this group is seated, no one will be allowed to enter or exit the room while the group of ten is performing their individual auditions. This helps to keep unnecessary distractions to a minimum during the auditions. After the group of ten completes their individual auditions, the doors will open up and audience members will be able to come and go as they wish. Then the next group of auditioners are called to be seated and the process repeats. This continues until all who have registered to audition have performed.
In order to make the audition process as fun and supportive as possible, parents and friends are invited to watch auditions to support those auditioning. You may choose to watch as many groups of auditions that day as you would like. This can be a great learning experience. Even those who aren’t auditioning are encouraged to watch.
For your audition, you will have one minute to shine on stage. Come prepared to sing a song or part of a song. Introduce yourself in a strong confident voice! "Hi, I am Betty Johnson, I am 12 years old, and I will be singing Les Poisson from Beauty and the Beast" Add movement and show us your personality! Whatever your strengths are, singing, dancing or acting, use them to make your audition shine.
Most CORNERSTONE YOUTH THEATRE auditioners bring their accompaniment with them on a device, like a phone or ipod. Keep audition music to one minute in length (includiing musical introduction, if applicable), as the directors have a LOT of people they need to see in just a few hours. If your audition runs longer than a minute the directors may, at their discretion, stop you by thanking you. That doesn't mean you did anything wrong! It's only in the interest of saving time and getting all the auditioners in before the evening runs too late.
Auditioning Tips
· Keep your music limited to one minute or less.
· In most cases, an upbeat song is best. Show energy and enthusiasm.
· Make sure your song is within your vocal range, so you can sing it confidently.
· Make sure you are familiar and comfortable with the song you are going to sing.
· Even if you are not a singer, sell yourself and your song.
· Do not audition ACAPELLA (without music)
· Do not audition with a track that has lead vocals on it.
·

General Tips for Auditions
Preparation
· Make sure you have an instrumental track. If you can’t find one for the song you want to sing - pick another song!
· Cut your song so that it is just 1 minute (you can use computer programs such as Garageband).
· Preparation and practice is essential. Directors CAN tell when your audition was selected at the last minute
· Rehearse your audition to the point the movements/dance are very natural and easy for you.
· Make sure you learn all the words and the notes of the song.
· Practice in front of a mirror so you can see your facial expressions
· Don’t be afraid to ask former directors, teachers, voice teachers or other/older students for tips or suggestions.
This is a great resource for you.
· Creativity is encouraged! HOWEVER, generally- less is more. Don’t bring so many props or something so
complicated that it distracts from your audition.
Performing
· Your introduction is part of your audition. Speak loudly and clearly!
· Become a character – become the person who is singing your song.
· If you are a dancer, try to add a little movement in your audition.
Misc. Tips
· If you mess up, forget words – keep going. Shake it off. Persevere, Directors will respect your ability to pull yourself through.
· Be respectful of those around you. This includes people running the CD player, directors, AC’s, adults processing your forms, and other auditioners. Directors see all of this.
· Pay attention to other auditions and take note of ones you enjoy. What makes them great? Learn from others.
· Directors know you are nervous. That’s OK! Even directors get nervous when they audition. Just breathe deep, focus and have FUN!
Some General Don’ts
· Don’t put your hands in your pockets
· Don’t throw anything.
· Don’t rock back in forth.
· Generally, handing things to the directors or going up to the director's table isn’t a good idea.
· Don’t show if you think you didn’t do your best/perfect… keep smiling and be confident.
· Don’t be surprised if you get cut off by clapping from the directors after 1 minute. Directors have a lot to hear!
· Don’t expect to be cast with a ton of conflicts.
· Don’t worry is someone in your audition group is doing the same song as you
Tips For Seasoned Students
Song Selection
· Your song selection is important. BE CREATIVE with it.
· Your audition should show us what characters in the show you could portray best.
·
Make sure you song is in the right key for you. Auditions are not the time to stretch out of your range. On the other hand- show off
your ra
nge! If you’re a soprano- show it off!
· Avoid songs that require you to sing through your “break”.
· Be careful about choosing a pop song, including songs from pop-musicals. They can be extraordinarily difficult to pull off well in an audition, especially when you're nervous.
